Nico Robin
About Robin
Series creator Eiichiro Oda has stated that Nico Robin is represented by the color purple and she smells of flowers. Her favorite foods are sandwiches, cakes that are not too sweet, and things that go well with coffee.
Nico Robin is an archaeologist and historian, and possibly the only person in the current One Piece era who can read the fictional poneglyph language. Her dream is to find and decipher the Rio Poneglyph, which is believed to lie at the end of the Grand Line on the island of Raftel.
As an archaeologist, Robin values ancient artifacts and buildings and will risk her life to protect them. She becomes extremely angry with those who destroy these ancient relics. This is best demonstrated during her fight against the Skypeian Yama, who destroyed many of the ruins they were surrounded by to hurt Robin. Robin is consistently portrayed as the wisest and most sensible member of the crew. She has vast knowledge of the One Piece world, and usually keeps her head during surprising situations, allowing her to logically analyze them without losing her cool. This is in direct contrast to the other Straw Hats, who often overreact comically or melodramatically to unexpected happenings and hold irrational ideas and conclusions. Even if the rest of the crew are subjected to extreme facial expressions at the same time, Robin would continue to keep the same calm face.
As a child, Robin lived on the island of Ohara in the West Blue. She studied archeology and history, and became an official archaeologist at the age of eight. Her mother Nico Olivia left her when she was two years old to study poneglyphs and discover the truth of the One Piece world's lost history. Olivia is captured and the Marines discover the secret of Ohara's scholars. She escapes and rushes to Ohara to warn her colleagues. Robin meanwhile has been spending time with a giant named Jaguar D. Saul, who washed up on shore and later turns out to be a vice-admiral of the marines. Robin and Saul make quick friends while he is building a raft to leave the island, but when he discovers who Robin's mother is he warns her that a 'Buster Call' is on the way to Ohara to destroy all of the scholars. During the ensuing battle, Saul destroys a number of Marine ships to protect Robin, but he is eventually killed by Vice-Admiral Kuzan (later known as Aokiji) Kuzan shows Robin mercy, allowing her to escape to a nearby island. The World Government places a bounty on her head of 79 Million beli, claiming she is responsible for the destruction of six Marine ships. She spends several years allying herself with various pirates and other unsavory groups in her search for the poneglyphs, but she is constantly betrayed, gradually eroding her ability to trust people. At 24 years old, she goes to work for Sir Crocodile as "Miss All Sunday", and meets the Straw Hat pirates during the Arabasta rebellion. After the defeat of Crocodile, she stows away on board the Going Merry, telling Luffy that since he saved her when she had no reason to live, he is now responsible for her life.
After the Enies Lobby Arc, Robin becomes one of the center pieces of the crew as she is taken by the World Government. With the help of Franky, the Straw Hat crew go to war with the World Government and face the dreaded CP9 all for the sake of rescuing Robin. It is here Luffy ask Robin what she wants and she exclaims that she wants to live and that she now has a purpose to live for. With this the Straw Hat crew go on the offensive and rescue Robin (Episodes 227-316).
In the most recent Shonen Jump fan poll, Robin ranked as the fifth most popular character and the overall most popular female character.
Another one of Robin's unique characteristic is the way she calls her fellow crew members by their own distinct characteristics. Zoro as Mr. Swordsman, Nami as Miss Navigator, Usopp as Mr. Long Nose, and so forth.
Robin's measurements, according to series author Eiichiro Oda are:
*Height: 188cm (6'2")
*Bust99 Waist59 Hips89 (39-23-35").
Relationships
Crew
Until the Enies Lobby arc, Robin often tried to distance herself from other people, even her friends, as she knows that she is bound to leave them sooner or later. For that she rarely calls her comrades by name, and instead uses titles, such as Miss Navigator (Kōkaishi-san, i.e. Nami), Mr. Swordsman (Kenshi-san, i.e. Zoro), Long Nose (Nagahana-kun, i.e. Usopp), etc. She at first only called Luffy and Crocodile by their names, although in a profesional manner as an agent. She does, on occasion, call Luffy Sencho-san (meaning Captain). She has a sort of sisterly or maternal relationship within the crew.
Over time, however, Robin becomes closer with her crewmates, and begins to get a sense of belonging to them, and has stated that she cares more about their well-being than that of the rest of the world. After seeing how far they will go in order to save her, she begins calling them by name in recent arcs, doing so with Luffy, Nami, Usopp, Chopper and Franky, so far. She is grateful to Luffy for taking her in, and is significantly more patient with his impulsive personality than many of her fellow crewmates. Robin is quite close to Nami, affectionately referring to her as "Nami-chan," and often spends time with her. Sanji constantly flirts with Robin, as he does with Nami, however due to the fact she often doesn't respond to him he tends to flirt with Nami more over her. Sanji was the first member (excluding Luffy) to accept her as one of the crew. Sanji describes her as 'a distant, more mature beauty than Nami,' yet calls her "Robin-chan" (vs. "Nami-san"), which has a "cuter" and more childish aspect. He also tries to make her suffix cuter by changing it to "Robin-chwan" at times, but Robin, unlike Nami, typically ignores his advances. Zoro initially distrusts Robin, but ultimately is willing to fight for her if she is in danger.
Friends
Professor Clover allowed her to become an archaeologist, it was his research on Poneglyphs that sparked her interest in True History. Clover allowed her to read books in his library which sparked her interest in them. She was supported by the other archaeologist in the Tree of Knowledge. They were her only friends and they cared for her more then anything. Even when they threatened to ban her from the Tree of Knowledge if she continued to spy on the efforts to uncover the True History, they did so in order to prevent her from being branded a criminal.
Aside from this, Jaguar D. Saul also held a special place in her heart for sacrificing himself to save her life.
Enemies
During her time in Baroque Works, Robin becomes the enemy of those trying to save the kingdom from Crocodile's conspiracy, especially Nefertari Vivi, who believes that she killed Igaram, and the Straw Hats. As a result, most of the Straw Hats were suspicious about her joining, until she won them over. Vivi currently understands that Luffy has some reason for having her in his crew.
Robin's greatest threat is always from the World Government, as from the age of eight they have ruthlessly hunted her. Aside from the World Government, Robin has made many enemies in the past through her constant betrayal, the most dangerous of which is Sir Crocodile. Where ever she went she was unable to find happiness and was constantly thrown out. And when the people she stayed with found out they were now the targets of the World Government, the group would turn on her, with the exception of Crocodile who agreed to protect her.
Several other civilians hate her, fearing her ability to awaken Pluton. Iceberg is one such example, as he states that while he would prefer to burn Pluton's blueprints, he must guard them in case the World Government uses her to revive the weapon. However, his opinion of her changes after he realizes that she is willing to turn herself in to save her friends, and he admits that she is a good person.
