Admiral (taishō) is a title of admiral signified senior command rank in the Marines. Admirals, also known generally as flag officers, were typically responsible for a high level military command at battle group or fleet level, and/or for administrative and political duties relating to Marine operations.
In One Piece, Admirals are shown as being the second highest rank behind the Fleet Admiral
Marine Admiral
in the One Piece world, there are only three Marines with the title of Admiral. They are known by their aliases, "Aokiji" (Blue Pheasant), "Akainu" (Red Dog), and "Kizaru" (Yellow Monkey). The Admirals and Fleet Admiral Sengoku are the only Marines within the World Government who have the authority and ability to issue a Buster Call.
The Admirals are crowned the World Government's "Ultimate Attack Force" , and are the strongest individual fighters within the World Government and the Marines.
One former Admiral has been shown since One Piece began and that is Fleet Admiral Sengoku; this was seen during Episode 277.
Should a World Noble be opposed, or injured, an Admiral will be summoned to take down the assailants who did the damage.
Known Admirals In The Series
Admiral Aokiji
Personality
Admiral Aokiji is a sleepy, somewhat lazy fellow, evidenced by the "sleep mask" he constantly wears over his eyes. He has a lazy, relaxed attitude most of the time, be it in simple flirting or in deadly confrontation.[1] He is so lazy that he can't evehimselg himself to work simple details like adding a crew's total bounty.[2] He even states that he's an upholder of "lazy justice". As the result of his nature, he appears fearless, without a care in the world and sometimes even childish. This infuriates many and several question whether he really is an Admiral.
Aokiji is a loyal follower of the World Government and, even if he does as he pleases, always carries out his orders, within his own ideals of right and wrong (He let Nico Robin go which was in contrast to the Marines's final orders). Like many One Piece characters (e.g. Smoker, and Jaguar D. Saul), after witnessing the senseless killing of so many innocent people, it is possible Aokiji came to realize just how low the World Government's morals had sunk. His sense of justice, however, differs greatly from that of his fellow admiral, Akainu, whose belief in "absolute justice" contradicts Aokiji's morals.
Aokiji is also known to say "Arararara" sometimes in conjunction with his lazy attitude.
Aokiji's moto is "Justice by laziness"
Admiral Kizaru
Personality
Kizaru's personality appears a combination of the more laid-back Aokiji and the more ruthless Akainu.
Like Aokiji, Kizaru seems to be very laid-back and easygoing, speaking very slowly and occasionally elongating the last word of his sentences even in surprising and unexpected situations, but he's apparently never shocked. Even when a pirate fired a gunshot at him, he seemed to be focused only on calling his subordinate, and didn't even mind. He even asked the offenders where his subordinate was. After uprooting a mangrove tree, he laughed to himself that the force he used was a tad excessive. He's also very calm and cool-headed, even in tense situations, such as when Basil Hawkins appeared unharmed by his attack, or when Rayleigh appeared. Unfortunately, he can be quite absent-minded and irresponsible, judged by the fact he used a lot of power in a kick directed at escaping pirates, uprooted an entire mangrove tree, and tried to call Sentoumaru with a black Den Den Mushi, which is only for intercepting communications. He also seems to prefer his original name, Borsalino, rather than his alias, as shown when Sentoumaru called him and he said, "This is Borsalino". His laid back persona is likely to be the partial result of his Logia fruit (which grants him near invinciblity)... Logia types tend to be casual and possibly "Oh-that-surprised-me" attitude (similar to Luffy's reaction to hits and bullets much earlier in the series and his occasional "Because-I'm-Rubber" claims).
However, more in line with Akainu, he is shown to have a ruthless side: he gives criminals, in particular pirates, very little mercy once he has targeted them. He even planned to capture Silvers Rayleigh, who had given up pirating over twenty years earlier, simply because he was the first mate of the Jolly Roger Pirates. Following the events of the Sabaody Archipelago, Kizaru has captured 500 pirates out of spite. Also like Smoker and Sengoku, he sees the Shichibukai as nothing more than just pirates, even if they are on the World Government's side.
Admiral Akainu
Personality
Akainu is a firm believer in "Absolute Justice", going as far as destroying the refugee ship simply due to the possibility of even one scholar sneaking on board. His logic is that if even one of the scholars of Ohara had escaped with it, the mission would've been a failure, much to the dismay of Aokiji, who called him a fool for overdoing things.
Additionally, he seems to have little tolerance for Marines who desert their post, even though that soldier did so for the sake of his beloved family. What exactly he does to them, however, remains unclear, but it seems that he kills them using his lava-based unnamed Devil Fruit powers.[2]
He is one of the few who knows that Luffy is Dragon's son. Whether he has some relationship with Dragon or if some of the Marines know that Dragon is Garp's son is unknown.
Trivia
• His name and other Admiral names (Aokiji, Akainu, and Kizaru), are taken from Momotaro legends (Momotaro met Pheasant, Dog, and Monkey as friends to accompany him in his journey)
• The model for Aokiji's face is the late actor Yūsaku Matsuda. The character that the actor played in the TV series and movie "Detective Story" (Tantei Monogatari) even had a similar hairstyle, the clothes and he wore the same sleepmask design.
• The model of Kizaru's face is the Japanese actor, Kunie Tanaka. Along with that, Kizaru's clothes and real name, Borsalino, are apparently based on a movie character that Kunie Tanaka played in his youth. The character, Borsalino, from the old Japanese film Truck Yarō (トラック野郎), wore a suit and shades similar to Kizaru's design.
• Kizaru and Aokiji used a sword made of their respective elements in battle.
• According to Hawkins:
In a battle against Kizaru the chances of defeat were 100%
In flight (retreating) the chances of success were 12%
On the defensive side circumvention chances were 76%
Survival; probability of death was 0%
Hawkins came to the conclusion that facing an admiral with just ten men was unwise.
• The way Akainu's character design is drawn resembles the famous Japanese actor, Bunta Sugawara. Akainu's real name, Sakazuki is apparently based on the three movies of Bunta Sugawara with "Sakazuki" in the title.
• Akainu is the only Admiral that has yet to confront the Straw Hat Pirates.
